Sunday Times.

I accomplished everything on my list of things to do today. I finally took down my Christmas decorations from outside, transferred my mini indoor composting to the outside bin and watered my plants. I also read the Sunday NYTimes and made a roast that reminded me of many childhood dinners. This week has been so productive, thank goodness since I’ve basically been not productive since the new year started.

I read a modern love column about a woman who returns to biking after her husband leaves her and she can no longer afford a Metrocard. The story involves overcoming a physical bridge and is obviously a cheesy metaphor for life. However, it made me think about running again. I used to run a lot and now I don’t. Maybe I should consider starting again (not until the weather breaks forty degrees).

Sunday’s remind me of Mike for many reasons including the NYTimes. I was in love with the Sunday Times when we first met and we spend so much time talking about it and the puzzle. The last time I was at his house I stole his copy of the magazine and didn’t tell him until I finished the puzzle.  I resubscribed the day after he died. It’s so nice to pay tribute to our friendship by returning to my ritual of reading the entire Sunday paper. I miss him with my wholeheart and have spent everyday since he died trying to thank the universe for his existence.

On a nonsentimental note, we went to local wrestling last night. Its mostly just fun spending time with friends and yelling weird things.

We Were Eight Years In Power is finally available at the library. I’m gonna scoot over there first thing tomorrow morning to pick it up before it gets checked out again.

resolution progress.

I've been doing pretty well with my new years resolutions. I've sent a decent amount of mail which was one of my main goals. When Mike died I got to re-read some of the gems he mailed me throughout our friendship which reminded me of A: how often I used to send mail and B: how nice it is to receive positive mail. Mail is usually negative and spammy and not a positive thing anymore. But nothing is nicer than receiving a handwritten note!

I have also been making lots of social plans which was another resolutions. Tonight we're going to PK and Nicole's for a partayyy and next week we're going to local wrestling. I've been also eating a lot of social meals with folks and trying to engage more with friends. Tomorrow I'm having lunch with Kathryn!

There is a stupid quote from Tony Robbins about how the worst day of your life can be the best day of your life. And as stupid as that seems, I think it can be true. Mike and Franklin dying on the same day was the worst day of my life (so far) but how lucky am I to have had over seven amazing years with both of them? And how much have they shaped my life? Also, I'm using their passings as a reminder to be a more engaged and better friend. So that is wonderful But I still miss them every single day.

Tony Robbins

I'm a little embarrassed to say this but I think I might like Tony Robbins. I watched the documentary featuring his super bizarre six day conference on Netflix last night, titled I Am Not Your Guru, and I found it so interesting but also found myself doing some internal reflection. Then this morning I watched a TED Talk featuring him. I don't see myself spending the $5k on a "date with destiny" with him anytime soon, but maybe I'll go to the library and take out one of his books.

Here are some of his thoughts on the universe (stolen from a blog of a guy who paid the $5k for that date with destiny):

Dedicate time every week to work on yourself. Reflect upon whether you are growing, and making progress.
What are you scared of right now? How can you move towards that? Discomfort is your growth!
Success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure.
Look at things from appreciation and gratitude. Instead of complaining about traffic, appreciate that we have cars to get us to places faster.
Modeling is valuable. Study and replicate the people that have already figured out what you want to do.
What's a goal that excites you? What goal would genuinely energize you immediately?
What distractions are holding you back from your goals? Remove them.
I also just really enjoy his theory that change doesn't happen over time, it happens in a split moment. I am always looking for a lightning bolt.

Also it turns out he was also born on Leap Year so maybe that is a sign.

Vegetables

I've been eating a ton of fruits and vegetables lately. At least the daily recommended amount. Today so far I've had peppers, broccoli, guacamole, carrots, tomatoes and pineapple. I've also been drinking a lot of water. A month ago I did the Whole30 diet as an attempt to help my back injury (didn't work) but after a week or so my brain became so focused. It was the best I've felt mentally in forever. So I'm back at it again. It felt how it seems to feel in Harry Potter when they take the good luck potion (veritaserum). I'd do anything for that sharpness back. So I'm back off the grains and stuff.

Today was also my first day back at work in a while. It's pretty cool to spend so much time with teens, and super cool teens at that.

2018

Every year I say I’ll blog again and I don’t keep up with it. Maybe this is the year! I’m feeling pretty blah since the passing of my cat and one of my closest and longest friends. To feel more appreciative I’ll list things I’m thankful for.

  1. I found a good deal on a typewriter. I’ve already used it a ton.
  2. I have a pineapple corer now which allows for super easy pineapple cutting. I eat two a week now! The other day I ate an entire pineapple in one sitting.
  3. I installed pandora on our new Roku. I remembered that I like the Say Hi station back in the day and I still do!
  4. I go back to work tomorrow. Lots of vacation seems nice but it feels weird after a while. Plus I miss my teens
  5. I took down my Christmas decorations and did laundry today. It feels real nice to have clean clothes!
  6. We went to breakfast at the Red Coach today. I always wonder why that place isn’t as popular among people my age. It’s sooo good. Plus they have great coffee cups.
  7. I texted wth Steven a bit this morning. I’m committing to be big a more communicative friend in the new year. I swear.
  8. I resubscribed to the NYT Sunday paper today. I freakin’ love the Sunday Times. Can’t wait to read the magazine next Sunday!
  9. I have had the same winter hat for at least eight years now. I lose everything so I am super impressed to have had something for so long!
  10. I ordered new boots (finally) and I think they ship tomorrow. I really wanted high quality American made boots and dragged my feet on ordering any (pun intended) and now my toes have been freezing in this 8 degree weather. They’re pretty cute and basic. Like me

19 March 2017

This weekend we adventured like I used to adventure. Pat's bff and his wife were in town. We got to see the falls at wintertime (not as cold as I remember), went bowling, tried different restaurants (which we never do) and explored every wing of the mall. We also played some board games and I won almost every time. Yahtzee champ.

This weekend was also me and Pat s dating anniversary. Six years ago was the small press book fair where I officially stopped prowling for other dates and agreed to focus my energy on Pat. I know, v. romantic.  Below are some pics from 2013 that I found on my iPad.

vacayyy

I booked our vacay today. We're returning to Key West in August. Yay! Pat and I are very compatible vacationers I think. We both want a very small amount of adventure and a large amount of lounging. We also both hate trying new things so that's why we're returning to Key West. We're even staying in the same hotel because we loved their pool/pool bar. Sometimes when I'm feeling stressed I think of our honeymoon laying by the pool in the sun and everything is better.

Lynne's Top Ten; Key West Edition!
  1. The bar is literally five feet from the pool and they make delicious frozen bevs.
  2. There are roosters that roam freely like squirrels and baby roosters.
  3. The hotel is across the street from the Hemingway House where 50+ six-toed cats roam freely. HEAVEN.
  4. We're going parasailing this year and I'll make Pat go snorkeling again.
  5. We get to go out to fancy meals days in a row. Literally my favorite thing on earth.
  6. We watch a lot of Law and Order on vacation. I'm not sure why.
  7. Swimming three times a day. Whaaat.
  8. Last time we were there I ate caprese salads for like a week straight. I think I'll do that again. Fresh mozz is pretty much heaven.
  9. I also took the week after our vacation off work so I basically have the entire second half of August off.
  10. Then Pat goes back to work which is nice because he doesn't get paid in the summer.
  11. Bonus: We will visit the Sea Turtle Hospital this time.

Snow days!

We've had two snow days in a row which means I've been working with a cat in my lap in my pajamas for two days now. I'll have to return to the real world tomorrow but it's been nice. And being back in the real world is nice too.

My car got stuck in my driveway and a very nice lady stopped her car and helped me shovel out. How kind does someone have to be to get out of their car at 11pm in the super snowy cold awfulness to help out a stranger? Two plows also came by and one of them plowed my whole driveway for free to help me get my car in the garage. How wonderful people are.

I had a submission published on The Mighty today. I have five people who "follow" my posts and get a notification when I publish something new. That feels real special to me.  The post is here: Michael J. Fox

Stand in the sun while you can

I've been thinking a bunch about why I say everything I think. Sometimes I feel frustrated because I feel like the only person who stick their necks out and says what everyone else is thinking/saying privately. But here I am laying in bed ruminating on that and I remembered why I do this. I have somewhere between five and twenty five years before I lose my ability to speak, why would I not use my words while I can?

My Day

I started rereading Eleanor Roosevelt's My Day last night. Its a collection of her newspaper columns she wrote during her time as First Lady. In 1935 she wrote "with the new day comes new thoughts and new strength" in a column right after the Supreme Court's decision tearing apart part of her hub's New Deal policies. I use this quote as a reminder on keeping perspective and not dragging things day to day. How funny to think it was just a random line in a column written eighty years ago about something way more serious than anything I deal with could be so impactful.

Exercising playlist

While running yesterday I realized how important the perfect exercise playlist is. A bad song can encourage you to quit and the perfect song can really be a good motivation to keep runnin'. So I edited my playlist and now have the ultimate exercising playlist. Here it is!
  1. Wolf Parade -You Are A Runner and I Am My Father's Son: Catchy, poppy, upbeat and even has the word runner in the title. Perfect for sure.
  2. Hot Chip-Alleycat: A longer, somewhat slower song (featuring a grumpy cat!), but it really picks up at the end
  3. Sea Wolf- You're a Wolf
  4. Vampire Weekend-Horchata: This song is just super upbeat and really builds at the end
  5.  Cursive -Sink to the Beat: Thrashy, screamy music is perfect for running, I don't care what anyone says
  6. At-The Drive In -Cosmonaut: Ditto above
  7. Katy Perry -Fireworks: WHATTA SONG
  8. Stars -One More Night: This song is sexy, super empowering and has a great build up. This is the song I go to when I'm getting tired
  9. LCD Soundsystem -All My Friends: Every playlist needs this song, it will motivate even the most tired person to keep running. I think it must be the consistent beat throughout the whole tune.
  10. Yeah Yeah Yeahs -Zero: Gotta love an empowered woman when running

Fig

I am addicted to fig candles. Especially in the fall when the apartment is cold and the sun is shining in. Courtney gave me my favorite fig candle before she passed away so it also reminds me of her and her kind spirit.

I've been reading Rupi Kaur poems day after day. What a strong spirit she has, it really could crush mountains. Below is my favorite of her poems.

Honey bunnies

We just returned home from a wonderful honeymoon to Key West and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. We spent a week in Key West just lovin', swimming, adventuring and lounging and it was fantastic. I cannot believe a world exists where roosters still wandering around freely. We snorkeled in a coral reef, went out for fancy meals and visited the Hemingway House (home of 50 six-toed cats!!)!!

It was also really wonderful to go to the Wizarding World. I wished and wished to be a wizard when I was a young girl who wanted to escape her miserable world and to be able to get so close was a dream come true. Although now I don't have a miserable world! We spent seven hours there and could've spent more if my feet didn't hurt so bad!

I've started re-reading the HP series again starting with Azkaban.

Back to work tomorrow. Kinda excited!

Holidaaaay season

I love when Halloween ends because I can officially feel Christmassy. In years past we've put up our tree on November 1st but we're opting for a real tree this year so we've gotta wait.

To avoid working fourteen days straight I took today off of work. I watched two christmas movies (home alone & Christmas with the kranks), strolled down Elmwood, had coffee with Mike and voted! I also purchased a tofurkey for a hopeful dinner party.

Today is also one month married. So far so good! We still haven't written our thank you cards (super ashamed) but have finally dealt with getting rid of old things to make room for new. I had a gift card to BBB and we bought a new French press. It's literally heaven on earth having one.

I did however skip my physical therapy appointment today. I skip doctors appointments frequently (and have the missed appointment fees to prove it). I just get so anxious leading up to them, I think I'm going to ask Pat to start taking me. Maybe I wouldn't skip then!
